She has always had a fear of monsters.
She would allow them to rest inside her eyelids so she would know just where to find them. At night they would slip down to the crook of her neck then down to the empty spaces of her chest cavity. She would hold them close knowing there were much scarier things in this world….those creatures that hid in the darkness and clawed at her back when she was alone. So she cuddled her monsters knowing the crude ugliness that really waited for her…..
She lived for the night so she could sketch her dreams upon the bars of her rib cage. The oppressive heat of August had her forget what it feels like to love and she lost herself to the twilight. She knew she didn’t need his anger suffocating her anymore. She escaped in her mind and dreams but instead of finding her wings of freedom, she put on the chains of deceit. It bound her beautiful spirit and held her down, now more afraid than ever.
February skies tore open one night, ripping a hole in her bedsheets while she tried to hide away in her dreams. It is in those dark spaces between bone marrow and heartbeats that she found herself – torn and breathless while whispering dark secrets into a strangers ear hoping he would save her. He tried until he saw she had allowed the monsters to crawl not only into her body, but took hold of her heart and soul.
He then left her folded origami limbs that reach desperately for him to take her into his hands. She longed to allow his soft touch restore her and show him her beautiful patterned paper…instead he just saw the misshapen monster she became.
Now she lies still waiting for someone to see the beauty that was always within. To gently unfold her and despite the creases and slight tears, will love her forevermore.
